Reflecting On Our First Year

This time last year, our family of three was experiencing some culture shock. We moved to Orcas from a mountaintop resort in Western Colorado, with snows that started in October and averaged over 14 feet. In some ways, Orcas was much less remote--being able to WALK to the Island Market, AMAZING-- but the challenges of navigating the ferry system as first time Washingtonians made it seem worlds--or oceans, ha-ha-- away from what we were used to.

Adding to the change was not only a different climate, but adjusting to a new job and trying to make new friends. Our son turned one shortly after moving, and we were determined to socialize him, something we had been desperately missing on that mountaintop. All in all, we were a little overwhelmed, but excited too!

There have definitely been some challenges to navigate, but we have been blown away by the Orcas Community, both the locals and the amazing visitors who flock to the island, whether it is as frequent visitors or their first time. We were determined to fit as much as we could into this first year --doing ALL the things-- so we could give the best possible advice to our guests on what to do, where to eat and hidden gems (of which there are MANY).

I guess, that is why we decided to start this blog. We want to highlight the amazing sights and adventures of Orcas through our eyes, so that when you come to visit, you have an informed idea of what you yearn for. That, and that it is the culmination of the tagline we have created for Landmark Inn. It isn't just about having a full kitchen, or being walking distance to Eastsound. It is about coming to Orcas and feeling like you are a part of the wonderful community. It's about knowing where to find hidden food spots, that serve some of the best lumpia we've ever had. It's about reading my blog about how to entertain a rowdy toddler on island and feeling like you are getting trip advice from a mom friend. It's about visiting Landmark and living like a local.

A gorgeous sunset from the ferry
